CURRICULAR  OPPORTUNITIES

 

 
    

FRESHMAN BAND/CONCERT BAND

 

This is a performance ensemble for Freshman band students to continue technical development and musical growth.  It is a 3-quarter course beginning in the second quarter and continuing through the school year.  The second semester ensembe is actually called the Concert Band and is pomposed of Freshman as well as upperclassmen.  Concert band is required of ALL continuing band musicians that do not audition into the Symphonic Band.
    

SYMPHONIC BAND

 

This is a predominantly aupperclassmen auditioned ensemble with an emphasis on continuing the development of the high school musician.  The Symphonic Band will perform 3 - 4 concerts during the semester as part of their curriculum.
    

WIND SYMPHONY

 

This course is for upperclassmen prepared to play advanced high school literature.  This will be a performance ensemble with a focus on higher level musicianship and achievements.  It receives an honors credit and will perform 3 - 4 concerts during the semester as part of the curriculum.
    

STAR CITY JAZZ BAND

 

The Star City Jazz Band meets as a curricular ensemble for the first quarter of the school year.  Proper instrumentation of standard jazz ensembles is necessary for membership and the ensemble is open for audition for students grades 10 - 12.
    

MUSIC HISTORY

 

Open to grades 9 - 12 as a survey of the history of popular music from 1600 to the Present.  Students will study musical developments and styles, relating them to historical periods.  Any student with an interest in music or history would benefit from this course.  The interest has grown so much in the past two years that two sections of music history will now be offered.
    

JAZZ LAB BAND

 

This class is the second jazz ensemble at Miamisburg High School.  It is open to grades 9 - 12 by audition for proper instrumentation.  This class will learn several styles of jazz and the fundamentals of swing, as well as expose members to beginning improvisation.  This class will continue as an extra-curricular ensemble the rest of the school year once a week.
    

MUSIC THEORY

 

Open to grades 9 - 12 as an opportunity to learn how music works.  Course will begin with a review of basic reading and quickly progress through scales, keys, intervals, chords, and how all of these things can be used to create the music we enjoy.  Any student with serious interests in music would benefit from this course.

 
    

ADVANCED CHAMBER ENSEMBLE

 

This course is for any Miamisburg High School band student that desires to prepare for solo and ensemble contest and spend quality time in small ensemble settings.  It is encouraged for those in advanced ensembles to prepare for the concert season.
